Letterman does what no one else has: confront McCain on G. Gordon Liddy.

On Thursday night, Senator John McCain finally made his way back to The Late Show with David Letterman. As you might remember, late last month, Senator McCain snubbed Letterman, canceling at the last moment, claiming he had to “rush back to Washington” to deal with the Wall Street crisis, only for Dave to discover McCain was actually just around the corner a few blocks away doing an interview with CBS News anchor Katie Couric.
Dave made good use of the time since being stood up, attacking McCain mercilessly for being unable “to do two things at once”, for “lying” to him, for not “sending his running mate Sarah Palin in his place”, and Palin’s inability to fill in for McCain on a simple talkshow (let alone as President). McCain’s excuse for not showing up last month: “I screwed up.” I desperately wanted Letterman to follow up by asking McCain just “how” he “screwed up” and force him to give an “unscripted” response. Sadly, Dave never did.

But Letterman did what no moderator did in three debates had done… ask McCain about his association with G. Gordon Liddy, the infamous lead Watergate Burglar for President Nixon in 1973 turned Right Wing radio show host, in response to the “William Ayers” question. The Senator has appeared on Liddy’s radio show no fewer than six times. Dave even noted McCain “attended a fund raiser in [Liddy’s] home”, just as he has been attacking Obama for doing with Ayers in 1996.
When Dave sprung Liddy on McCain just before the commercial break, McCain (tongue-in-cheek) played dumb. When they returned from the commercial a few minutes later, McCain (having had time to think up a response), defended his association with Liddy on the grounds “He has served his time” (unlike Ayers, who was never convicted). He then accused Ayers of saying “on 9/11, he wished he had bombed the Pentagon”. Please note that during the disastrous 1994 “Branch Davidian” siege in Waco, Texas, Liddy was explaining “how to kill ATF agents” on his radio show.
The utter hypocrisy of McCain/Palin and their supporters for accusing Senator Obama of “paling around with terrorist(s)” because he served on a Board with Bill Ayers and “attending a fund raiser in his home”, all the while defending McCain for “paling around with convicted felon Liddy” and “attending a fund raiser in Liddy’s home”, is palpable.
It was great to finally hear someone confront McCain on the subject. Too bad it wasn’t during the debates.

What does it say about American journalism that we get the hard hitting questions from comedians like Letterman, Stewart, and Colbert?
Besides the Watergate burglary for which he served 4 1/2 years on a 20 year sentence, FELON G. Gordon Liddy also broke into the office of psychiatrist Daniel Ellsberg and even planned to fire bomb the Brookings Institute where Ellsberg “Pentagon Papers” were stored. He also threatened to kill investigative journalist Jack Anderson who was on Nixon’s “enemies’ list”. Liddy and E. Howard Hunt met with a CIA operative to discuss the possibilities, including drugging Anderson with LSD, poisoning his aspirin bottle, or staging a fatal mugging.
Liddy made plans to kidnap protesters at the Republican National Convention in San Diego (before it was moved at the last minute to Key Biscayne, FL) and dump them in Mexico. At the gun range, Liddy bragged that he named his targets “Bill” and “Hillary”. He once planned to lure Democrats to a house boat to photograph them with prostitutes in compromising positions.
In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain’s re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy. Over the years, The ex-Felon Liddy has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator’s campaigns — including $1,000 in 2008.
McCain last appeared on Liddy’s hate-talk radio show in May. Last November, when McCain went on his radio show, Liddy greeted him as “an old friend,” and McCain said “I’m proud of you, I’m proud of your family.” “It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”
BTW, Liddy grew up admiring Adolph Hitler! As a young kid growing up, when he listened to Hitler on the radio, Liddy said it “made me feel a strength inside I had never known before. Hitler’s sheer animal confidence and power of will [entranced me]. He sent an electric current through my body.”

It’s like McCain should never be questioned about Keating or Liddy, his many connections to lobbyists, etc. The Democrats try to hard to “play nice” and end up losing election after election. I have lost every vote for president since 1960 except my votes for Bill Clinton. I am getting tired of getting my hopes up then losing. I still worry about complacency and voting fraud stealing away this one too. (BTW, I was working in Saudi Arabia and my ballot didn’t get home soon enough for my vote to count for Jimmy Carter, and I was a Republican in 1960 and ’64).
