Of the current eight GOP presidential candidates, I don’t think I loath any of them more than I loath Newt Gingrich. Partly because he’s been around the longest, but mostly because I know of no one that can be both SO SMUG and SO WRONG at the same time. And it wouldn’t be so bad if the Wingnut masses didn’t eat it up, cheering wildly in approval when he says some of the most asinine things imaginable. A flip-flopper of “Romney” proportions, Gingrich can look you in the eye and (falsely) attack Chris Dodd and Barney Frank for their lobbying on behalf “Contrywide Mortgage” and anyone that supported Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, when he himself… we now learn… was paid between $1.6-$1.8 million dollars (he first only copt to $300K) as a lobbyist for Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac (oops, “No”. According to Gingrich, he was just a “historical consultant” that went to Congress to try and get laws/rules changed on their behalf… unlike a lobbyist.)

Gingrich once worked as a history professor at West Georgia College (I pity his former students, being fed historical fiction as fact) for just three years in 1970, and has written or co-authored roughly 40 books (including Rick Perry’s “Fed Up!”), just about all of which fall into the category of “historical fiction” where he makes up stories about things past presidents said or did to the point where you (nor he) can no longer tell fact from fiction.

But probably Newt’s coup de grace came Saturday when he attacked the OWS protesters on Wall Street, telling them to “go get a job right after they take a bath.” Funny, because just last June, Newtie called President Obama “insensitive” and “out of touch” for making a joke about “shovel-ready jobs”… jobs that he should of known weren’t forthcoming. I swear you can’t make this crap up.

“Why” is Gingrich suddenly so popular after being declared “dead” just a few short months ago? One word: “Time”. The voting public has the attention span of a gnat in heat. Gingrich’s campaign imploded almost from the day he announced, publicly criticizing Republican’s beloved Paul Ryan and his plan to privatize Medicare as “Rightwing social engineering”. That alone might not have doomed him, but then he went on to claim that “any ad that quotes me is a lie.” He was caught dead-to-rights flip-flopping on whether or not he supported invading Libya, and who’ll ever forget how he led the impeachment of Bill Clinton WHILE having an affair himself? (Gingrich explains this hypocrisy by claiming the impeachment was for “lying under oath”, not for the affair itself. Of course, Clinton never would of BEEN under oath in the first place had they of not forced him to testify about the affair under oath.)

If you’re like me, there’s some “well-meaning” person in your life that sends you Rightwing email nonsense, often wondering how you’ll respond (or IF you can even respond at all). In my case, it’s Mom. My mother (in her 70’s now) doesn’t quite understand politics. Whenever she receives something even remotely political, she forwards it on to me because she knows I’m into politics. But Mom has a LOT of Rightwing Racists nuts as friends. I must note, Mom herself is NOT a racist, but she doesn’t recognize blatant racism in her friends. When she forwards on to me a picture of President Obama dressed as a pimp or African Witch Doctor, or a picture of all 44 presidents that ends with a picture of just two eyes on a black background, she thinks it’s simply funny. She might of even sent them along to her black friends if she had any. But Mom trusts me when it comes to politics (and computers). It took months (years?) of me complaining (and apologizing on her behalf) to get her to stop forwarding on contemptuous Right Wing propaganda to all her friends before running it by me first.

Last week I received the following bit of tripe with the question, “What do you think?”:

It’s all so simple, please read below, but #3 says it all most beautifully and succinctly………………

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Can you think of a reason for not sharing this? Neither could I……

I probably surprised Mom by conceding that “there probably isn’t anything wrong with these statements in and of themselves.” They just aren’t based in reality. Here’s what I told Mom (you might want to bookmark this for when this email inevitably finds its way into YOUR inbox):

The problem with this kind of over-simplification is that it starts from the false premise that everyone starts out equally, everyone paying their full fair share. They aren’t. The richest man in the world, Warren Buffett, has been everywhere on TV pointing out that his SECRETARY pays a higher tax rate (32%) than he does (17%) w/o ANY deductions or exploiting any loopholes. If he DID abuse those loopholes for the wealthy that the GOP keeps giving him, he might be one of the people paying just “1 percent“. Some corporations not only pay NOTHING in taxes, but we GIVE THEM MONEY on top of it.

The irony is, while all these “Cognitive Sentences” sound perfectly logical, The Wealthy *aren’t* paying their taxes. YOU AND I must make up the difference. THE WEALTHY are the ones getting “a free ride” off the backs of the poor & Middle Class, not the other way around. They are taking money FROM US to give to people who are already rich. It’s Robin Hood in reverse. And the idiots that write these chain emails know it.

Newt Gingrich said that “the protesters think they can occupy a park they didn’t pay for“. I’ve got news for you, Newt. *I* paid MORE in taxes last year than GE and Exxon… COMBINED. Wanna tell me again how *I* am occupying “a park I didn’t pay for”?

Newt thinks the OWS protesters are all just a bunch of pot-smoking hippies that he says need to “go out and get a job”. WHAT JOBS, Mr. Speaker??? (more respect than he deserves.) And I can GUARANTEE YOU that this same man will be campaigning across the country over the next few months on how BAD the economy is under President Obama, how high unemployment is, and even ask “Where are the jobs?”

These Rightwing bastards make me sick, but none more so than Newt Gingrich.

Sign my petition for GREEN JOBS TOMORROW fast & cheap. Use those $4 Billion in oil subsidies to put Solar Panels on the roofs of 40,000 government buildings, or order 100,000 hybrid mail-trucks. Not only would this INSTANTLY CREATE JOBS, it would spark ENTIRE INDUSTRIES with a future, reduce our dependency on oil, reduce greenhouse emissions, and quickly pay for itself (and cut future expenses) with the energy savings. We need 5,000 signatures by December 20th.

    Mugsy– I can totally empathize with you and your mother’s political situation. My mother (early 70s) is very similar. She’s actually pretty liberal (voted Obama 2008), but now supports, gulp, Ron Paul, albeit not as hardcore as some folks. (!!) I really haven’t talked to her in depth about her choice, but, as she’s gotten older, I too have realized that she’s susceptible to sloganeering. She’d probably take that list of five lines above and pass it along, without thinking it through, arguing it “sounds about right” without really thinking it through. Sadly, pols prey upon elderly (and religious) people with a few good lines repeated ad nauseum; the dog whistles are hard to resist when much of life is spent looking forward to lunch– my mom’s favorite part of her retired day.BTW, I think newt’s $1.6M+ take was total over his “consulting” period, not his annual grift.–ff

    Yes, you are right about Newt’s salary as a Gross not annual. I made the correction.

    Regarding your mother’s support for Ron Paul: never fear. Next week I announce my “Presidential Candidates” Series of LITERALLY DOZENS of links on each candidate that I’ve been collecting over the past year (similar to “The List” I did for 2010).

    I should cover all eight presidential candidates, and the GOP members of Congress, just in time for the Iowa Caucus.
