  1. Grant in Texas - September 29, 2014

I CHOSE to become a Democrat at age 33 and voted for George McGovern. I was raised in a strong Republican family and as a result became a “black sheep” to some so changing parties has come with some hurt. I suffered barbs from former friends, even unfriended by a Republican fraternity brother whom I’ve known over 50 years as he has become a tea bagger and didn’t like a remark I made on my Facebook page. So much for the “brothers forever” vow we once took. I’ve lived under 13 presidents now and even though hearing disparaging remarks about Truman, even participating in some civil rights and anti-war demonstrations (when still a Republican), I don’t remember our nation as divided then as it is now. The Twain quote I feel describes Fox News and right-wing hate radio, a reason I believe for our much divided nation.

I am finding myself becoming unwelcome on several “progressive” sites like Reader Supported News, The Nation, and Common Dreams. I used to be a regular contributor to Alternet. Yet of late I’ve been slimed by the far left, called a DINO because I do not agree the likes of Greenwald, Cornel West, Tavis Smiley, etc. then I become the target of left-wing hate (yes, some are no better than the haters on the right). Of late there seems to be as much hatred of Barack Obama as one might read on right-wing blogs. It is “Democrats” who vote 3rd party or stay at home who are responsible for Republicans winning. Even a Democrat with some questions about his resume is better than most Republicans anymore. For instance, do these Democratic party outliers realize that the WINNER gets to choose judges? I recently was attacked by many in a comments section just saying I was from Texas. As a retired teacher I tried to make corrections to lies being told about our public education and even though a retired teacher WORKING IN TEXAS, I was called a liar from the “unintelligence belt”. If there was a GOP anymore in the vein of a Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, I would probably re-register as that kind of Republican. I dislike the crazies on the right AND the left. Being a centrist, pragmatist I don’t feel welcome anymore in either party.
